The city walls — the most complete example of medieval defensive walls in England — encircle the entire historic core and make for one of the best free walks in the country. The Jorvik Viking Centre, the JORVIK Dig Site, the National Railway Museum (free to enter) and the Yorkshire Museum round out an exceptional programme for groups of all ages and interests.

The largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, built over 250 years from 1220 to 1472, houses the most extensive collection of medieval stained glass in England. Climbing the 275 steps of the central tower rewards groups with a panoramic view across York and the Vale of York to the North Yorkshire Moors and the Wolds. The Undercroft Museum beneath the nave reveals layers of Roman, Viking and Norman archaeology directly beneath your feet.
The Jorvik Viking Centre, built over the excavated site of an actual Viking-age street, uses extraordinary reconstruction technology to transport visitors back to AD 975. Walk-through in a "time car", the experience recreates the sights, sounds and even smells of Viking Jorvik in remarkable detail. The adjacent JORVIK Dig Site allows visitors to see archaeologists at work on ongoing excavations — exceptional for school and educational groups.
York at Christmas is one of England's great festive experiences. The St Nicholas Fayre, one of England's largest Christmas markets, occupies Parliament Street and the surrounding area throughout December. The city's medieval streets, lit up and filled with traditional stalls, create an atmosphere quite unlike any modern shopping centre.
