The Peak District was Britain's first National Park, designated in 1951, and it remains one of the most visited and best-loved landscapes in England. Straddling the border between Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire and South Yorkshire, the Peak District divides into two distinct characters: the dramatic Dark Peak to the north, with its high moorlands, gritstone edges and peat bogs, and the gentler White Peak to the south, where limestone dales, sparkling rivers and picturesque stone villages create a more pastoral beauty.
