Snowdonia — or Eryri in Welsh, meaning "abode of eagles" — is Wales at its most magnificent. The Snowdonia National Park covers 827 square miles of North Wales, encompassing the highest mountain in England and Wales (Snowdon, 1,085m), a dramatic landscape of glacially-carved valleys, pristine lakes, ancient oak woodlands and the most rugged and demanding walking terrain in the country outside of Scotland.
For groups travelling by coach, Snowdonia offers a genuinely spectacular experience. The mountain railway to the summit of Snowdon is one of the great British heritage railway experiences and is perfectly suited to groups of all fitness levels — you can ride to the summit in comfort and descend on foot if you wish, or simply enjoy the extraordinary 360-degree views from the Hafod Eryri summit visitor centre. The Llanberis Pass, the Swallow Falls at Betws-y-Coed and the medieval fortress of Conwy Castle are all within easy coach reach.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway is the obvious highlight — Britain's only public rack-and-pinion railway, operating since 1896, climbing nearly 1,000 metres in just five miles through increasingly dramatic scenery to the Hafod Eryri summit centre. On clear days, the views extend to the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland. The railway operates from late March to early November and must be booked in advance for groups.
Betws-y-Coed, the gateway village to Snowdonia, is one of Wales's most charming destinations in its own right — situated at the confluence of the Conwy, Llugwy and Lledr rivers and surrounded by stunning woodland. The Swallow Falls, a short walk from the village, are Wales's most visited waterfall. Pont-y-Pair ("Bridge of the Cauldron") in the village centre is one of the most beautiful bridge-and-river scenes in Wales.
Snowdonia combines superbly with the North Wales coastline for a multi-stop group day out. Conwy Castle, Caernarfon Castle (the finest of Edward I's Welsh fortresses and birthplace of the first English Prince of Wales) and the Llandudno Victorian seaside resort are all within 30 minutes of the Snowdonia boundary by coach.
