Edinburgh is one of Europe's most spectacular capital cities — a place where medieval grandeur, Georgian elegance and vibrant contemporary culture collide against a backdrop of volcanic rock and ancient hills. The city divides naturally into the dramatic Old Town, with Edinburgh Castle perched on its volcanic crag above the Royal Mile, and the immaculately planned Georgian New Town below, with its elegant squares, crescents and broad boulevards.
For group visitors, Edinburgh offers extraordinary density of world-class attractions within a compact and very walkable city centre. The Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the National Museum of Scotland, Greyfriars Kirkyard, Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat — one of the best urban walks in Britain — can all be reached on foot from the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile descends from the Castle through the Old Town past a succession of historic closes, wynds and landmarks to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the King.
The National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street is free to enter and exceptionally well-curated — covering Scottish history, science, design and the natural world across five floors. For groups with literary or historical interests, Greyfriars Kirkyard (home of Greyfriars Bobby and numerous historic graves), St Giles' Cathedral and the Writers' Museum are all worth including. The Scottish National Gallery on the Mound holds one of Europe's finest collections of European Old Masters and Scottish paintings — again, free to enter.
Edinburgh hosts what is arguably the world's greatest annual cultural event — the Edinburgh Festival, which runs throughout August and encompasses the Fringe (the world's largest arts festival), the International Festival, the Military Tattoo and the Book Festival simultaneously. Groups visiting in August should book accommodation and coach hire many months in advance. The Hogmanay celebrations (30 December – 1 January) are equally spectacular and genuinely unique.
