The Seven Sisters, just 12 miles east along the coast, provide a sublime natural counterpoint — seven soaring chalk cliff headlands, each named, that represent England's most spectacular coastal scenery.

Built for the Prince Regent as a seaside escape from the formality of court life, its extraordinary exterior of Mughal domes and minarets conceals interiors of breathtaking opulence in chinoiserie style — particularly the Banqueting Room with its one-tonne crystal chandelier suspended from a gilded dragon. Entrance is ticketed and group booking is recommended.
The Brighton Lanes — a maze of narrow medieval alleyways at the heart of the old fishing village — offer an excellent mix of antiques, jewellery, independent fashion and food in a setting quite unlike any other British shopping experience. The adjacent North Laine is Brighton's arts and alternative quarter, filled with vintage clothing, record shops, vegetarian restaurants and creative studios that capture the city's bohemian character perfectly.
The walk from Cuckmere Haven to Birling Gap passes over the summits of all seven sisters — Went Hill Brow, Baily's Hill, Flagstaff Point, Brass Point, Rough Brow, Short Brow and Haven Brow — along a path maintained by the National Trust. The views from the cliff tops across the Channel and back along the serpentine meanders of the Cuckmere River are magnificent. Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain at 162m, and the distinctive red-and-white striped Beachy Head lighthouse below it are visible from the eastern end of the walk.
